Keeping a ranch afloat in a volatile market is a story that hits too close to home for Tyrell Bischoff. After a number of rough winters, and low cattle prices, Tyrell’s family faced a formidable reality: sell the ranch and lose their way of life forever or find alternate funding to keep the ranch alive. Episode 2 of My Wild Land is one young man’s story of dealing with his father’s death, working with managers to restore sheep populations, and keeping the love of ranching going.

The Hellyer family sees ranching as a lifestyle, one they are not willing to compromise. In the face of a market that points to increased housing developments, the Hellyers have doubled-down on improving their land for cattle and wildlife, and preserving open space for generations to come. This episode of My Wild Land brings to life the strength of a no-frills western family, and their determination to preserve a good lifestyle.

Al and Barb Johnson have witnessed the changing landscape of the West firsthand on their ranch, and in the surrounding area. Their land isn’t just home to a leased cattle operation, but also is used as winter range and during migration by hundreds of deer, elk, and moose. With that in mind — and faced with encroaching subdivisions — the Johnsons decided to take legal measures to keep their property a working ranch and wildlife habitat for future generations. In this episode of My Wild Land, we feature a new era of ranching, one that works 24-hours a day to protect a way of life and wildlife in peril.
